Insect storage cabinets
Ideal for storing collection of
butterflies, moths or other such items
The cabinets contain ten large drawers. These are mahogany framed units with
tight-fitting framed glass lids. Each drawer and lid is a matched pair with the
original cabinet-makers numbering. The drawers have the original cork lining and
have been freshly papered with 150gsm art paper. They have a built-in 'camphor
cell' to ensure preservation from insectivorous pests. These drawers formerly
held specimens in the Natural History Museum in London before being superseded
by the modern metal storage system now in use there.
I am not sure of the exact origin of the drawers but they are very much like
Hill units. They have the original plywood bottoms and probably date from the
early/middle of the last century.
The original carcasses had been discarded over time. I have meticulously
constructed new carcasses using high quality wood and ancillary materials to
complement the fine old drawer units. The cabinet frame and door are made from
sustainable South American mahogany. See (mosstimber.co.uk)
Side panels are in matching veneered MDF for stability. The glass doors have
cranked solid brass hinges and a traditional 3-lever brass lock and escutcheon.
Two keys are supplied for the lock. The plinth and the top of the cabinet are
made from the same materials.
Two cabinets are available and preference will be given to a purchaser who wants
to keep them together as a pair if desired. Offers are invited in the region of
£700.00 each. There is no VAT.
